editing the rests

Hi, I'm a musescore novice and am trying to get rid of the automatic rests that appear when a line with measures is created. I am finding that they don't go away with the number of beats in the measure, so how do I get rid of them? Thanks so much for your help!

Hi, music is note and silent, if there is nothing, it's not a sheet music, it is music paper.Musescore start with the silent, with these rests you are speaking, and you , you enter the notes you want.
If you are in a 4/4 time signature, your measures are filled with rests of 4 times, waiting your notes
If you want in the first and in the 3rd measures, a quater note on the first time, you enter this quater note at the first time of measure 1 and 3, you will see , that the whole rest becomes 2 rests , 1 for 1 beat, 1 time, and 1 for 2 times, so you enter 1 time and the 3 others times are rests, but it's obliged that the total is always 4.
You do the same in measure 3, and do nothing in the measure 2, which is silent with a whole rest.
If musescore start with nothing, you will be obliged to enter also the silent, because , in music, a stave with nothing in, does not exist.

Sorry for my English.

The rests do automatically go away when you replace them with notes. My guess is you are making one of two common mistakes - either you are trying to enter notes into voices 2, 3, or 4 without first entering notes into voice 1, or else you have enabled "insert mode" instead of the regular note input mode.
