Adding notes and use of ties
I really am sorry about this, but I am finding it increasingly frustrating using some aspects of this software. When I attempt to correct something it changes something else. I have been successful in learning to produce 10 songs so far so have learnt what I feel are the basics.
Now I am trying to write a piece for pipe organ and find that note values change in the same bar and sometimes in the next bar when I want to tie certain notes. I have been careful to follow all the necessary instructions, but the whole process is taking hours and I am not getting anywhere. There must be a simple solution.

Difficult to answer, without a picture or your score.......
I suggest that you read about voices. It sounds like you want two notes of different lengths on the same spot, but entering one changes the other. This will tell you how to fix that using up to 4 voices per staff.

I highly recommend spending time reading the Handbook, also check out some of the various online tutorials. if you continue to have trouble, please attach your score and describe one specific task you are having trouble with, and we can show you how to achieve that. Probably what you learn in the process will help clear up your confusion and you'll be able to figure out the rest.
