Are you entering notes in something other than voice 1?
Newly added measures always start out with a full measure (not half) rest. You don't need to do anything special to get rid of it - just start entering notes and they will replace the rest. Assuming, as mentioned, you are in voice 1. Also assuming you didn't switch to "insert" mode, which isn't something one should normally be using.
