drum input issue

• Apr 8, 2020 - 02:22

When I select Drumset or Percussion - and I suspect for other sets I don't use as often - I'm supposed to be able to select one of the sounds and then notate with my mouse as normal, or double click the option to enter it. However, every time I try to select a sound I intend to put in multiple places - say, a closed hi-hat - I currently half to first select an empty measure so that when I click the hi-hat, the automatic quarter note goes there instead of over the rhythm I'm working on.

Could it be that you're running 3.4, but not yet 3.4.2 ?
It had a bug that single click in the drum palette also entered a note into the score as a side effect of enabling single click for the normal palettes. Update to 3.4.2 where that bug is fixed and drum input should work according to the handbook page linked above.

I'm not totally sure I understand, but it sounds like maybe you are already in note input mode, then you attempt to click a measure? Don't do that :-). It's no different for drums than any other instrument - clicking in the score will enter a note. So you only click an empty measure to select an input location when not in note input mode. Once you're there, don't click within the score unless you want to enter a note - again, same for drums as for any other instrument. The expectation is that once you go to note input mode, you just enter notes left to right. If you need to jump from place to place in any other order, don't click - use the cursor keys, and the various modifiers like Ctrl and Alt to control how far you move, whether you move horizontally or vertically, etc.

BTW, you mention that you notate with your mouse "as normal", but be aware the more recommended and certainly much faster method is to simply type the notes using the letters A-G.

You misunderstand. I'm not clicking on the score, I'm clicking in the selection of different sounds offered by the drums, here. Normally when I single click on them, I select them and hear which sound they are. Recently, a single click on one of these options has resulted in the sound just being added to my score, even though I'm not clicking on the score. I must be in notation mode to see this pallette
