MIDI import confusion

Hello! I've RTFM, and looked around the web for guidance, to no avail. I have imported a MIDI file generated in Cubase, but now I can't figure out how to assign each track to the appropriate internal sound. Here's a screenshot of what I am looking at. Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

Start by selecting the correct instrument in that import window; currently all of them are set to Grand Piano.
Then, if the linked sound afterwards isn't to your liking, you the mixer as suggested above.

Thank you for replying. When I try to select a new instrument, I'm only offered the option of 3 types of piano.

The track names like Piccolo, flute, etc. were the names I assigned to the tracks in my DAW. I'm not clear as to why the name "Piano" is being added to the left of these names when I attempt import.. I suspect therein lies my problem?

The reason for that is that your MIDI file claims those tracks to be of the instrument Piano and not the instrument you wanted. So perhaps see how you can set those tracks to identify as the correct (or closest matching) instrument according to the General Midi standard.

If that is not possible, then import them as-is, then open the staff properties for each staff and use the "change instrument" option there.

I'm still not quite accomplishing this -- apologies

In Cubase, in the track Inspector each track was being sent to "Acoustic Piano." I set all the tracks to blank. In MuseScore. I can assign each track to the appropriate name and GM sound by right-clicking > Staff/Part Properties and then locating the correct instrument. This even sets the correct key signature (if a transposing instrument) as well as Clef.

What has me stumped is if I go into Edit > Parts... if I for example want to change staff order. In that list it is STILL showing the same "Piano, piccolo" type entries for each staff line. It isn't exactly an issue because the correct GM sounds ARE being played back. It's just...confusing

There's also a section of about 8 bars where the Clef and Key Signature are being repeated every bar -- no idea why. I can delete the Clef markings, but I can't get rid of the key signatures.

This is something of a first for me. I've been composing with Sibelius using sound sets (EWQLSO, and HWO). But I want to be able to compose in the DAW, and then export a MIDI file (cleaned up, of course) into a notation program. I am going to do some reading/watching/conversing and then go back and try to import this again. I've learned a lot so far -- thanks again

As for the repeated clef/key markings.

  1. Make sure you're on MuseScore 3.4.2 I remember there was a bug in older versions with courtesy key signatures appearing double even. The bug was fixed, but scores that have it can't be magically fixed, so you'd need to try out the following steps as well.

  2. Layout → Style… → Page

  3. Uncheck the courtesy options
  4. Save and close the score
  5. Re-open the score
  6. Re-enable those options

If that doesn't fix it, then you might've found a new bug with MIDI-import, in that case please:
1. Make a minimal file with Cubase that shows the wrong behavior after import.
2. Create a bug report at https://musescore.org/en/project/issues/musescore and attach that sample file to it, including mentioning your musescore version and what exactly to look for (measure numbers etc..)

That way someone can investigate it more closely.

The name listed in Edit → Parts can also be set in those staff/part properties by changing the partname field directly under the button where you select the instrument.

Rather than setting those tracks to blank in Cubase, can't you set them to the correct instrument there (instead of previously being set to Acoustic Piano)? It'd probably save you most of the hassle you're correcting afterwards now.

Previously, I DID have each track named with the correct instrument -- those names got imported, but had the word "Piano" added to them. In Cubase, in the Inspector, is where I found the track being sent to Piano, which I assume is a General MIDI designation. When I set that to blank, it removed the word Piano from the import into MuseScore. ???
