Second stem for the same chord in the same voice

• May 3, 2020 - 02:27

Apologies if this has already come up — I searched the handbook and the forums and couldn't find an answer. I have a bunch of chords with notes half-step apart but the composer does not want them to appear on two separate lines (e.g. a D-natural and a D-sharp as part of the same chord). The score I'm working with adds a diagonal stem for the second note on the same staff. (See the attached screenshot.) I can't find a way to do this in MS3. Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

There's no direct support indeed, but you fake if you tried hard enough, add the note, use the inspector to move it, add a line and shape it manually, etc.

But, while some editors do choose to do this, it's also perfectly acceptable to just add the two notes on opposite sides of the same stem and show the accidentals in front - in other words, exactly what MuseScore does by default already.

Thanks very much to you both — the MuseScore default looks good to me as well, to be honest... I just wanted to see if I could match this convention — it's good to know that I wasn't missing something that was already there. Thanks again for the quick and exhaustive response!
