Weird Slur Orientation?

• May 21, 2020 - 17:42

The attached file is an excerpt from something I'm currently transcribing and parting out. For the sake of convenience, I have summed it up in an image: Screen Shot 2020-05-21 at 12.26.47 PM.png

I know the default engraving rules are based on Behind Bars (I don't own a copy of that book, and therefore I can't tell whether or not this is intended), but does this default orientation look weird to any of you? I think I'll end up coercing that slur to face downwards in the finished score/parts.

OS: macOS 10.14, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.4.2.25137, revision: 148e43f (in case you needed to know. If this is fixed on the latest nightly, I'll probably take your word for it.)

The rules are somewhat subjective, but in general, in cases where the stems are all the same direction, the usual recommendation is to place the slur on the notehead side if the slur is relatively short, but always above the staff if relatively long, because underneath the staff a long slur is more likely to interfere with dynamics. So that's what MuseScore does - notehead side for short slurs, always above for longer ones. Whether this qualifies as long enough is, as I said, subjective. If you have dynamics in there, I think in the end you'll be happier with it above, but no harm in flipping it below if that works out better.

To me the main issue here is the share of the slur, not the orientation. Some awkwardness is somewhat unavoidable give the contour of the notes, with a high peak close to the right end making it hard to get the end of the slur close enough to the note without either making is asymmetric (generally a no-no) or else very curved. So I'd probably massage the shape of this one a bit if I left it above.
