Multiple Voltas for 2 Repeated Sections

• May 29, 2020 - 22:37

I can't get my song to play 3 times with multiple endings because of consecutive repeats.

My song (unrolled) is structured as follows:

Intro (measures 1-4)

AABB + standard ending (measure 20)
AABB + standard ending (measure 20)
AABB + alternate ending (measure 21)

As you can see, each A and B section is played twice every round. This means A and B are separate sections with start and end repeats. The first two times, they end the same way. On the third go-around, the last measure should be different (a different ending that leads to another section of the song that hasn't been written yet).

When I add a D.S. to measure 20 (the end of the first AABB) that leads back to rehearsal mark A (measure 5) and check "play repeats," playback repeats the entire song as intended (i.e., another AABB). When it gets to the end of that section, I need it to return to A for a 3rd round. Effectively, I need another D.S.

I read a forum post where someone said his score honored 2 stacked D.S. markers in one measure, but I think it was for D.C. markers at the end of the score. Mine are in the middle. I've tried stacking D.S. markers; separating each AABB round where measure 20 is endings 1 & 2, measure 21 is 3 & 4, and measure 22 is ending 5, but either the repeats don't happen correctly or the D.S. and coda markers don't honor the voltas; and using default D.S. markers with 'Jump to: segno', 'Play until: end', and 'Play repeats' toggled in hopes that the music will keep chugging along and honor the voltas. Neither of these has worked.

I know double D.S. playback isn't standard, but I was wondering if I'm missing some sort of workaround. I have no issues working with voltas, generally, but, in this case, I can't get them to work with two back-to-back repeated sections where I have to return to the top each time.

Edited with updated file. I've entered the endings the way I want them to play, but, after each volta, I need it to repeat back to A. I thought putting a D.S. under the volta would do the trick, but it only plays it once through even if "Play repeats" is toggled.

Jumps by default and convention only play the last round of simple repeats (and after all repeats are done). You can change that via 'Play Repeats' in inspector for the jump.
D.S. under a Volta might not work, it needs to get there during playback in the first place, but see abobe
Also repeats don't "nest".

Jojo, thanks for your response. I understand that this counters convention, but I thought that's what 'Play Repeats' was intended to do: provide an option to address users' desires to alter playback against conventional notation.

I've reattached my score (updated again) to reflect the exact roadmap I'm after with the first 6 endings on page 1. The dal segnos do work, but the 'Play Repeats' option does nothing. If the 'Play Repeats' option is already unconventional, then I would expect it to buck standardized playback in this situation. It doesn't. Does this defeat the purpose enough to qualify as a bug?
