Tutorials for version 3?

• Jun 7, 2020 - 07:55

Hi,

This is my first post. I've just downloaded version 3.4.2 of MuseScore, but the only tutorials I can find online are for version 2. Before spending a lot of time working through these tutorials, I'm wondering whether I'll find them useful in learning version 3. Or are there some updated tutorials perhaps in the pipeline?

Many thanks to the community that makes this product available. I wish I was familiar enough with the software to offer to create some tutorials myself, but maybe one day that will be the case!

Welcome aboard! For version 3 you could learn a lot from Marc Sabatella's course Mastering MuseScore, described on this promo video:
https://youtu.be/iCG1M6rbol0

Marc is MuseScore's director of education, and the author of the original printed manual Mastering MuseScore which covered version 2. Marc has also been a key contributor in terms of software development for new features in each version of MuseScore, and you'll see Marc as a regular contributor to these forums too.

Many thanks for your reply. I had a look at a YouTube promo for the course, which didn't mention version 3. But I've now had a closer look at website for the actual course, and it looks as if the content has been updated to accommodate changes made in version 3, so I think I'll give it a go when I get a bit of free time! Thanks again.

Thanks for the plug! To be clear, the course was originally developed for MuseScore 2, but has been continually updated since (and will get another pretty heavy dose of updates once 3.5 comes out).

It is unfortunate there really is no good basic set of free tutorials specifically for MuseScore 3. Not that I don't want people signing up for my course, but I know many people don't need anything so comprehensive, just a little something to get started. This something I've been wanting to do, but I have been too busy. I may yet do that post-3.5. But realistically, the tutorials already made for MsueScore 2 really aren't that far off.

There were when 3.0 first came out a year and a half ago, but much as continued to change since then, so any writeup made that long ago is also out of date.

Main to change that are relevant to the things discussed in the tutorials are the Inspector and automatic placement. The Inspector existed in MuseScore but was much more limited, and many things required dialog boxes that can now be done directly in the Inspector. Automatic placement is something that just happens and avoids the need for so many manual adjustments to avoid collisions, just makes scores look better by default.

Aside from that, some menus moved around, so spend a couple of minutes browsing around to see where things are.
