Changing default program
I have both Musescore 2 and 3 installed on my PC. I want to make Musescore 3 the default program going forward, retaining Musescore 2 so that I can continue to work on older/ saved files.
How do I KEEP Musescore 2, but make Musescore 3 the default program?

That is automatic. If you install MuseScore 3 after MuseScore 2, the former will register the extensions for itself

Actually, I did install MuseScore 3 after MuseScore 2 - and it did not register the extensions automatically. Is it necessary to deinstall 3 and "try again," hoping it will work this time?

Yes, one of the very few cases where a reinstall may help
