Change Chord Duration
I would like to change the duration of a chord from 1/4 to 1/2 notes, but it appears that I need to delete and re-add. Is this the only way to do this?

Select the chord, then select the new duration in the toolbar (outside of note entry mode).
Also consider the shortcut Q/W to half/double duration of an item (works post-entry in note entry mode).
Or if this is about a range consider using Cut and then Edit → Paste Half/Double Duration

if you simply change the duration while the chord is selected, the change won't affect the chord. But a trick could be, after doing that, to dot the chord and cancel it with shift+q and shift+w, and the change will be effective.

"If you simply change the duration while the chord is selected" and, as @jeetee said, you are "outside of note entry mode", yes, the change does affect the chord immediately. No further action required.
