Explode voices

• Sep 8, 2020 - 21:39

I am trying to explode voices on different staves. I'm thinking the tools > explode feature does that. I have a piano grand staff that has 3 voices in the treble staff. Only a couple notes are voice 3. I created two additional staffs between the treble and bass staff (so now there are 4 staffs - 3 treble, one bass). I thought when I do tools > explode, it would put the first voice on staff 1, the second on staff 2 and the third on staff 3. However, it puts voice 1 on the first staff, voice 2 on the second staff, then it SKIPS staff 3 and puts voice 3 on the fourth staff (the bass staff). Odd. It's only a couple notes, so easily corrected but still odd.
Is that intended conduct? Did I maybe setup the staffs wrong? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Not sure about your aim, so maybe attache the score and describe the expected result. It should work as expected, if you delete the bass clef from the grand staff - maybe, if necessary, copy the notes of the bass clef staff before to an extra staff.

My guess is that voice 2 has some chords in it so you get some of voice 2 on added staff 2 and some on 3 then voice 3 ends up on 4.

Explode will put one one from a chord onto its own staff as long as there are enough staves then they'll apparently be lost. Using explode to move voices works, as you can see, in a limited manner. Using the selection filter and cutting and pasting by voice is better so chords you missed in voice 2 doesn't cause the problem you encountered. I usually use explode for chords only in voice 1, mostly because I've been using it since that was all it would do. When I need voice 2 on a new staff I cut or copy it then paste it to the new staff.

Note that within a voice, on chords where there are fewer notes than staves (assuming you have enough staves) the notes on the last staff that has a unique note is repeated on lower staves.

Sorry Mike I don't understand what you are trying to say about chords and not having enough staves and something being lost. I have three staves for the three voices. Don't know what you mean by "Using explode to move voices works, as you can see, in a limited manner." There was nothing limited about it. It did the job, it just didn't do it the way you would think it would. Does Explode separate voices onto different staves or does it not? And it is a ""glitch" to put the third voice on the fourth staff or not? I do know that some music notation programs will separate chords into different staves (ie. A three note chord will be separated into 3 staves), but I thought the Explode feature in Musescore separated voices, not chords.
I am familiar with the select voices feature, but I was hoping Explode did the same thing, but faster.

It's not a glitch to put voice 3 on the 4th staff if one of the lower voices has a 2 note chord. Explode does not only put voices on their own staves, it puts each note in a chord on its own staff. Limitation might be the wrong word. Problem isn't the right word either because it works the way it's designed. It's just something you need to be aware of if you end up with more staves used by explode than you expect to see. Explode is not the best tool to use if your goal is strictly to put voices on their own staves if there are any chords within a voice.

Thank you . That was an excellent explanation. I didn't know explode did two things simultaneously - separate voice and separate chords. Now I can see why it put the 3rd voice on the 4th staff. New Feature request: One button that separates JUST the voices into separate staves.

There is actually a better way to put 4 voices on their own staves. I believe this is more in line with the actual use rather than having one of a few staves exploded into several staves while keeping the other staves in tact. You can generate parts.

Read the link for details, but you can make custom parts assigning each voice from an instrument to it's own part. Keep in mind that you can have several staves from any combination of instruments in a part. It's still not one button but it has the advantage that you can edit either the main score or the generated part and changes will be along to the other.
