since update, program is not responding
I updated the program yesterday and used it for a while. today when I try to open the program, it is not responding. I have windows 8.1 going on an HP envy. Has anyone else had a problem like this?

Things that I tried that didn't help were:
I restarted the computer
I deleted the program and reinstalled it completely
Anything else I should try?

Try running it from the command line with the -F (Capital F) option. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/command-line-options

I'd like to try that, but I don't know where I would type that command line. (I've only opened programs by clicking on icons, unfortunately)

This may be a dumb question, but if I uninstall the program and reinstall it, will it be back to factory presets?

No, when you run the program it creates new files. Uninstalling doesn't touch those files, restoring factory settings does. If you press the windows button and press R you will get the command line. You will need to type
C:\Program Files\MuseScore 3\MuseScore3 -F
You probably didn't change any defaults when you installed it so this should work. This should be a one time thing so MuseScore shouldn't cause you any more problems.

I managed to use the command line with the F, and it did restart the program, and it asked for language, keyboard type, etc., so I think we're ok.

If I remember correctly, my computer came with Windows 8 (it could have been 7) and is still sufficient for my MuseScore needs so I wouldn't suggest that as one of your first options.
