Corrupted file
So I made a score, saved it as I always do, and a few hours later I come back to find that I can't open the score, no matter what I try. Is it beyond repair? Is there a way to fix it? I'm really confused since nothing weird happened to the file.

Unfortunately this has been a problem for a long time and no one can reproduce it on demand or trap the error when it happens. The only thing you can do is minimize the damage when it happens by letting auto save do its thing often. The if it does happen you will only lose data since the last auto save. Auto save doesn't update the file you are working on but creates a new one. Jojo's link explains how to find one.
