Midi controller no note input

• Nov 23, 2020 - 18:12

I am on Musescore 2.0.0 rev 6e47f74 and I am unable to input notes from my midi keyboard. Follow the seven steps, in this tutorial, https://musescore.org/en/handbook/note-input#midi-keyboard
But when I get to step seven I am only allowed to add chord notes to a note that I already input with the mouse/computer keyboard.

I am on Mac 10.14

That's an extremely old version, so first order of business to get things running smoothly would be to update.

Beyond that, make sure your keyboard sends note off messages. Some apparently don't, and that would lead to the problem you describe.

As the very first thing update to 2.3.2, the last 2.x version.
Then consider updating to MuseScore 3 too, currently 3.5.2... (you can use one 2.x and one 3.x in parallel and at the same time, see https://musescore.org/en/faq#faq-307102)
The handbook you show is for MuseScore 3, although the MuseScore 2 version is not too different in that respect, see https://musescore.org/en/handbook/2/note-input#midi-keyboard, but MuseScore 3 also has https://musescore.org/en/handbook/note-input-modes

Make sure you start up Musescore AFTER you plug in your keyboard. I noticed mine stopped working when I unplug and replug my keyboard while Musescore is open. Once I restart the program, the keyboard will allow note input again.
