6-part a capella

• Dec 28, 2020 - 23:40

Hi, again -
I'm finally trying to set up a starting point for the 6-part piece I mentioned a while back.
The prevailing consensus was to use 2 staves vs 3; but - there's a problem, due to using the 'quartet' template. (With any other template, I can't assign the voices to different channels - to make use of 'Mute/Solo' function.)
A second problem is naming the voices in the added third staff (see first attachment).
Is the only solution to use a separate staff/system for each voice as in S-A-T-B ?
Thanks in advance

I would use two voices per staff. This makes it easy for all singers to know which notes are theirs. Putting a third voice on a staff makes it difficult to determine which note is for which voice when stems point the same way.

When you asked in Staves / Voices we said to use two voices on each of 3 staves.

I did read up till The prevailing consensus was to use 2 staves vs The prevailing consensus was to use 2 staves vs 3 and it sounded like you were using 2 staves.

In your first score you have two staves on one instrument (a voice instrument). Each instrument can only have one name.

What you need to do to the SATB template is add another instrument and place it in the most logical place for your score. This will allow to to name the staves something like

Soloist /
Tenor I

Tenor II /
Baritone I

Baritone II /
Bass

I think this is what you are trying to do.

Yes, you're understanding basically what I'm trying for; in one of my attachments, the 1st I think, I used the 'quartet' template, which is pretty much identical to the SATB 'closed score,' which I tried, and attached here, but it brings the same problem as before.
What I did with the Quartet (Tenor/Lead, Bari/Bass) templt was insert a third staff for the other 2 parts -
but it had the same two parts as another staff. I tried in the new tmplt, as you suggested, adding another voice. but this only adds one voice. Is there a way to add a 3rd staff containing two 'new' voices?

You can change the names on the staves. Double click the name and change it. As for voices, you enter those on each staff. Put the higher voice into voice 1 for that staff and lower voice into voice 2 for that staff. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/voices for more info on entering notes into two voices on a staff. When you add a staff or instrument, you can put up to 4 voices on each one. So you could have 12 voices on 3 staves if you want, don't do that though, it's really tough for singers to read.

You can mute each voice in the mixer individually. Select the staff in the mixer, then on the right side in the mute section there are 4 numbers. When you select a number it mutes that voice. As for making voice 1 or 2 only louder, that's not possible using the mixer. There is a not too bad work around possible using the inspector.

So what would the workaround be, Mike?
And Mark, I think I would have the same situation with Men & Women in place of S/A & T/B or Ld/Tnr & Bari/Bass. In the Score (see attached) S-A and T-B are reflected in the Mixer as Men & Women, but for me, that's not really an issue -- my problem is adding TWO voices to a third staff. As you can see in the pic, it's not possible to act on two voices separately in the middle staff as you could in the other two staves (unless I'm missing something).

The middle staff use the "Baritone" instrument. As I said, you need to use the "Men" or "Women" instrument to get the special subchannels. So just delete that staff and add it as "Men" - or use Staff/Part Properties to change the instrument to "Men". It will then work exactly the same as the staves already present.

There's a lot of functionality with the Mixer, which may lead to lots of questions.

O.K....
Take your example "2stvsof3.mscz", and assume one wishes to use the mute/solo function to solo voice 3 of the treble clef:
Solo V3.png

Here;s the result:
2stvsof3-voice_3.mscz

Of course without separate channels for each voice, the volume cannot be controlled independently for voices that share a channel (even though mute can be toggled in the details area of the Mixer).
Here's your SATB score comprised of 3 staves, 6 channels:
SATB_3_staves_6_channels.mscz
In the Mixer, use the channel display arrow to expand each instrument's tracks.

Thanks, jm-- I appreciate your trouble there, but I do want to be able to control the volume.
Mark, I thought your suggestion was going to work, but then there were two problems - one 'major'
and one 'minor'
1. It won't play voice 1 in the first staff!
2. the instr. Name [men] is a smaller font than the others

That's why I also attached the file: "SATB_3_staves_6_channels.mscz" which has independent volume control sliders for each voice. Anyway, it is the same setup you have in your attached "StreetTrial.mscz" file.

The reason you can't hear voice 1 in that first staff is because you have it muted in the details area of the Mixer. See my picture above and look at the part "Open the Mixer" and the "Mute Voice" 1-2-3-4 boxes. In your attached score, you have Mute Voice 1 checked for the TENOR LEAD. Look in the Mixer.

Also...
To change 'Men' to 'MEN' use Staff/Part Properties and change the Part name to all capital letters. (It's not a font size issue.)
See:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/staff-part-properties

It wasn't actually the word "Men;" I had changed the name to Voice 3 & Voice 4.
Being lower-case, the cap V looked smaller than the other upper-case V's - just an optical illusion.
Anyway, everything's working now - Thanks, guys.
I have one more question tho' - what caused this?

Generally it means the file is in use, like another instance of MuseScore is currently writing it. In practice, it probably means something went wrong with the previous save and the the OS still thinks the file is in use even though it isn't. Do a save as to another name, then after closing MuseScore, you should be able to poke around using your file browser and see more about what's up, perhaps moving the old copy aside and renaming the new to the old name.
