I/O Simply Gone - All Sections Under "PortAudio" have disappeared

• Jan 6, 2021 - 02:26

All my drop-down options under PortAudio in the I/O have disappeared. I am perplexed. Nothing has happened between today and yesterday (musescore ran smoothly yesterday). I got on today, after installing Sibelius, and all audio options have just gone and deleted themselves. I've restarted the PC and musesore with no luck. I use a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 which has been the buggiest piece of hardware I've ever purchased. I'm thinking it could be the cause for the issue, but I'm not sure how to restore anything to musescore as it simply will not bring about any audio options, even though other programs recognize the other options like my monitor's headphone jack (in case of emergencies like this).
Any suggestions?

Sibelius can take over your audio. There is a box to uncheck in Audio Engine Options that will release the audio device.

Right, that's what I tried to do (probably should have added this) but they would continue to not show up... I'm thinking it's a new bug, as even new soundfonts simply won't show up like they used to. It's not a huge issue right now as I'm not working on anything outside of the default soundfont, worse comes to worse I'll just reinstall. Thanks for the reply.

What specifically goes wrong when you select them? Tell us exactly what you are clicking/pressing, what you expect to see happen, and what happens instead, then we can understand and assist better. But Soundfont adding works just fine in every release of MuseScore, so unless the files themselves are corrupt (which is certainly possible, hard drives do fail), it should work.

When I double click on the sound font file, it installs onto musescore with the prompt asking if you want to do that, but then doesn't show up in the synthesizer. I've restarted musecore and they still don't show up. The method I used to install them is the same method that I used before when it worked. Everything appears like it should work, but they just simply don't appear in the synthesizer tab. I've downloaded sounds I know to work and have used before to see if my other ones were corrupted, but they did the same thing: installed but didn't show up.

One thing I'd like to note, though I'm not sure if it's related, is that I recently gotten an audio interface - a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2. The thing has been incredibly buggy, with it initially working before all audio becoming crackly after a few hours, and now is always crackly. Strangely, musescore seems unaffected, continuing to play sounds clearly. This extends to the playback on the musescore website on chrome, which is very strange, considering that all other audio (like youtube, spotify, etc.) aside from Windows 10 sounds is crackly. After restarting my PC once, my musescore lost all audio sources, leading me to start this thread with trying to fix that issue. I've also recently installed sibelius, which I know can take over audio sources and I've unchecked its privileges to do that. Maybe some of these things are connected, maybe not, but these problems all started when I got the Scarlet.

Interestingly enough, I just got a Focusrite Solo. I use it for recording with a mic, and not with MuseScore. But after the first use, I unplugged it and later opened MuseSore and the playback was all crackly. It took a bit of fiddling in I/O to straighten it out. I don't blame MuseScore or Focusrite. I didn't connect the two events until I read your post. I haven' had opportunity retry the Focusrite yet.

Nice that you were able to straighten it out :)
I can get musescore quality to be clear now that the I/O is straightened out too, but the rest of the sounds have become crackly, even upon many complete restarts and making sure drivers are updated; now I'm just waiting to hear back from their support team.

Sorry - forgot to add that it sits at 0%. I'm thinking maybe it's trying to load multiple soundfonts at once...? I'm going to let it sit at 0 and come back to it and see if it just needed a lot of time. Not sure what could be causing the long wait, as my PC should handle tasks like this like a breeze. Thanks for your continued help :)

Good news! Looks like it really was just time. The rest of them don't take nearly as long, so not sure what the issue was, but whatever it was, it's over. Now I just need to hear back from the Focusrite people about my crackling issue. Thanks!
