reduce parts in portion of score

I would like to use only 2 instruments in the beginning 20 measures of a piece, then use the full ensemble the rest of the way, and reverting to those 2 instruments at the very end. I know I can simply write those lines and leave the other parts with a 20-measure rest, but I'd like to make the score a bit easier on the conductor.
I tried to select those 20 measures and manually delete the other part lines for just those, but the entire piece was reduced to 2 parts. I can't find anything in the handbook.
Any ideas?

Got to Format / Style / Score, turn on "Hide empty staves" - the unused instruments disappear automatically. You may or may not want to also use the option to skip hiding them on the first system.
