Combining 2 notes of equal pitch into a single note with the same total duration
I have 2 adjacent semi-quavers of equal pitch and I want to convert them into a single quaver. Problem is if you delete one first it inserts a rest which you cannot then remove. If you increase the duration of one first it moves the last note in the measure into the next measure with a tie. If you then delete the second semi-quaver it just inserts a rest and leaves the moved note in the following measure.
Cut and paste to move the notes back to the left of the rest does not work on my version 3.6.2 on W10 – it just jumps back to the original position when you try and paste. The same happens with the notes in Voice 2, which is supposed to be more flexible
Basically, it seems to move notes to the right when you do not want it to, and then it cannot move them back to the left when you do want it to. “

Use a tie?
Change the duration of the 1st to a quaver?
I am not sure how you tried increasing the duration of the firs,t but if they really are two consecutive semi-quavers and you select the first and turn it into a quaver (eg, by pressing "4", or clicking the icon on the toolbar), it should do exactly what you are asking for, no extra notes or ties created. So there must have been something else going on. If you try again and still can't get that to work, please attach your score and show us which note you are trying to lengthen.
Also, cut and paste should work perfectly as well - select a range of notes you want to move (be sure it is truly a range selection, with a blue box around it), then Ctrl+X, then click the destination and Ctrl+V. Again, if you continue to have trouble, please attach your score and tell us exactly which notes noter(s) you are selecting and where you are trying to paste.
Be sure to be in the normal "Input mode".
SImply, click the first and tape 4.........
Thank you to all those who replied. There seems to be an amazing community behind the MuseScore software.
Marc has hit the nail on the head. When I create a test score the suggested commands work okay with no problems. However, when I try the same commands on an actual score created from a midi file, then they do not seem to work in the same way, if at all.
I attach 2 mscz files – one the way the score appears in MuseScore with errors which I cannot seem to fix, and the other showing the score as it should be.

OK, so click on that first dotted half-note and then click on the half note in the Note Entry toolbar (or press 6). Then do the same with the rest, What happens?

MIDI import is not generally a very efficient way to get readable sheet music, because it was never designed for that purpose and lacks some pretty basic info. So it can take longer to "correct" such an imported file than to just enter music directly. In your case, it seems you're a number of things to make matters worse, all those rests you've deleted or dragged out of the correct position, etc. I think your MIDI file probably had notes that overlapped and thus for proper notation required multiple voices and you are trying to change this manually, but that's not the way. Instead, best to quantize the MIDI file before importing, to remove these inappropriate overlaps. And/or, you'd probably want to tell MuseScore to use only a single voice when you import it if you're sure you want that, or use things like Tools / Implode to combine things where possible. If you attach the actual MIDI file, we can assist further.
That said, you can kind of rescue the current score as follows:
Again, though, with a MIDI file that was quantized, or with appropriate options during the import, that wouldn't be needed. It still won't be exactly what you show in the "as it should be", but that's because of inherent limitations of MIDI.

Dear Marc,
Many thanks for your time and the detailed response. You may well be right that the quickest way of using MuseScore in this situation could be to enter the notes manually from the midi file software – ie have both open on screen at the same time.
Nevertheless, I will go through your suggestions very carefully and hopefully learn a lot more about using Musescore in the process. This was after all my first attempt.
Thanks again,
Eric
