length of a measure

I have a line with only two measures taking up the whole line. There is a whole not in each measure. For ease of reading for the singer, I would like to shorten the length of the measures so I can have three measures on the line. Is there a way to shorten the physical length of the measure?

Depends on why you have only two measures in that system.
If there are other measures following, you possibly have an unintended system/page break in there (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/breaks-and-spacers).
If they are the final 2 measures, then you might want to rebalance the previous measures instead, as to not end up with only 2 at the end (same link as before).
If the break is intentional, but you want additional "white space / indentation / margins" then have a look at horizontal frames (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/frames#horizontal)

Definitely if there is nothing but whole notes, you should be able to fit many more than two measures. It is likely a system break you need to delete as mentioned above. if you continue to have trouble, please attach your score so we can understand and assist better.
