Playback of Voices and Staffs in SATB Arrangements

• Jul 17, 2021 - 17:25

When composing 4 part vocal arrangements in SATB format, I want to use voices 1-4 so I can mute them and play back just a single voice at a time. When I enter the voices 3 and 4 in the lower staff, however, I get the rests for voices 1 and 2. I know I can go back and make those invisible, but that seems tedious. Is there a way to enter 4 part harmony and mute individual voices for each part? I know the recommendation is to use voices 1 and 2 over again in the lower staff, but then muting voice 1 mutes it in both staffs. Suggestions?

Don't do that. Use voice 1 in every staff. You can mute (and solo) the individual instrument, Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass, no need to resort to muting voices

BTW: you don't get rests in voice 2, or if you do you can delete them.

If you are creating a 'closed' SATB score (2 voices per each of 2 staves) you can use voice 1 & 2 for the 'Women' instrument and voice 1 & 2 for the 'Men' instrument. You can then mute individual voices in the Mixer. Simply select either 'Women' or 'Men', then choose which voice (1 or 2) to mute.

It is a closed SATB score and I have the voices used this way. I have the mixer expanded to see the individual parts. The problem is clicking the Soprano Mute also mutes the whole Women's channel, as does the Tenor in the Men's. I can independently mute the Altos or Basses, but not the Sopranos or Tenors.

Well, then it is not really a 4 part arrangement as you wrote in the initial post...
Anyway, always and in every staff start with voice 1, if need be add voice to, try to avoid 3 and 4, only use these if absolutly needed and voice 1 and 2 are already used.

The Mixer works for Sopranos and Tenors the same as for Altos and Basses. the slider only seems to influence the entire part, but doesn't

It has 4 parts, so I'm not sure how it's not really a 4 part arrangement. It needs to be formatted as closed SATB for congregational sheet music distribution. This is the intended use of closed SATB format. I initially wanted to use voices 3 and 4, which would have been simpler, but ran into the rests problem.
Are you saying your Mixer lets you independently mute any of the 4 parts? Mine does not. I can only independently mute the Altos and Basses, but not the Sopranos or Tenors. Mine does not work the same for both. Wondering if this is a bug.

Reading through past discussions of this back into earlier versions, even, the recommendation was for closed SATB to use voices 1 and 2 in the lower staff, but then the Mute Voice buttons don't provide independent control. The mixer, it seemed, was the intended solution for the latest release, but it doesn't seem to be controlling the channels like it should. I think I'm going to have to just switch to 4 voices and ignore the mixer and manually hide the rests.

Unless you are trying to put four independent parts on a single staff - which would be highly discouraged! - you should absolutely not need four voices. Voices 1-2 for each staff is completely sufficient. If you attach your score, we can help show you where things went astray, but it definitely does work when done correctly, no hiding of anything required.
