I frequently can't enter my entire lyric line --it automatically defaults to a new measure and I have to use the system text function to return to the correct measure

Did you run out of notes for the lyrics in the previous measure, so that a new measure is needed to continue with the lyrics?
Please attach your score explaining exactly where the issue is.
My guess is your notes are in different voices and the lyrics are sticking with one voice at a time, as one would normally expect (so you can enter soprando and alto lyrics separately, for examples). As mentioned, if you continue to have trouble, we'd need you to attach your score and describe what you are trying to do in more detail in order to understand and assist better.
