Best Operating System Recommendations for Musescore

• Aug 15, 2021 - 16:44

I'm looking to buy a new laptop (PC) and I'm wondering: What do I look for as far as a decent operating system to best handle Musescore--processing speed, memory, sound card?

You don't need anything fancy or powerful to run MuseScore. 8 GB of ram and an SSD are preferable in my opinion. No special audio required. One of the computers I run MuseScore on is a 10 inch Surface Go. Works fine. But it's worth investing in as much computer as you can. You never know what is coming down the pike.

bobjp's advice is good. Musescore 3 runs well on even modest computers. I have an 11 year old desktop PC running Windows 10 with 8 GB of RAM and an old style hard disk. It loads a little slowly due to lack of SSD but after that Musescore runs just fine. Maybe Musescore 4 will have higher requirements.

For a good all round laptop with a bit of future proofing I would avoid budget processors like Intel's Celeron range.

If you are not too constraint by your budget, take intel i5 (or more) or AMD Ryzen 5 (or more), 16GB memory and SSD 256GB
While not strictly necessary to run MuseScore these are choices that will allow you to keep your laptop much longer that the spec just lower (i3-Ryzen 3/8GB/128GB), and for a reasonable price increase.
In any case do NOT buy a processor lower than intel i3/Ryzen 3

Almost any new laptop will run MuseScore (as will most laptops less than 7 years old). Concentrate on whatever else you will be doing on your laptop to determine the specification needed.
