Playback button is grey and cannot be pressed

• Nov 2, 2021 - 14:37

I just downloaded MuseScore and when I open a file and touch any note, it does not play. The play button is grey. I checked Edit-Preferences-I/O settings and under PortAudio there is nothing there to select - no API or device or MIDI. I checked the Sound - Volume mixer and Musescore is not there (if it is supposed to be? I was looking in help menus and looked there) I looked at the Synthesizer and it is not available - I can't choose it. I checked my drivers for sound and all is updated and works fine for everything else. I'm using Windows 10. I have restarted my computer a couple times just in case that would help and it didn't change anything. So the only way I can play these is to upload it to the MuseScore account online and then play it. I need to be able to hear it in the editing software as I work on it. My daughter had this same problem on her computer about a year ago and she can't remember how we fixed it, or if we fixed it, but I see how it works on hers and the install on mine just does not play. I have looked at help topics and all I see is references to go places to figure out how to fix it. I don't want links unless it specifically calls out this problem because from what I have researched, there are no answers. I really want to use this program, but maybe I should find something else.

I should think that is precisely what you want - to figure out how to fix it.
You must understand that someone from here can not drive to your house to troubleshoot your specific problem. I mean, after all, people have different OS's, different hardware configurations, other audio software that may be open and competing with MuseScore, etc. Unfortunately there no "one fix" for all. We need your help.

So, please tell us exactly which of these steps you have tried:

Unfortunately, every system us different, so we can't provide foolproof instructions guaranteed to fix the specific problem on your specific system. Everything works perfectly 99.9% of the time, but for the 0.1% of cases where it doesn't, it could be due to any of a dozen or more different specific issues. That's why the articles give a range of things to try,. Each one of the suggestions has been known to fix a problem an actual user has had on their system, so any of them might turn out to be the same as the problem you are having, Again, though, no way to know without your actually going through and trying them all.
