Musescore not saving

• Nov 24, 2021 - 18:28

MuseScore keeps shutting down and deleting important files.

I spent the whole morning composing, and then the app just quits. I had just saved my most important piece, but when I reopened it later, it was gone. Other times I'll have files that aren't mine show up. This is very trying on my patience, because I have no confidence my things will be safe even after I "save" them.

Is there a way to get my files back and how can I stop this from constantly happening?

What do you mean by "gone"? Do you mean the score opened, but it showed blank staves?

This is unbelievably bizarre. Could you attach one such file? (Perhaps it is a backup file.)

By "gone", I mean all progress since this morning is not there. The piece looked like it did before I edited it. I can try to attach a file, but the one in question is very problematic with uploading. It is unlisted, and thus when I open it on the editor, it looks like the very first version of the file. But on the website, it is some concerto or other. I am afraid that if I attach it, it will show as the original file and not the concerto.

What you are describing here is adefinitely a sign that you are opening the wrong copy of the file - like you probably have one copy in one folder, and another more recent copy in a different folder entirely - either because of a "Save As" or "Save a Copy" you did, or else a previous crash recovery had you working on an autosave copy rather than the "real" file. So see my other reply on how to address that.

If you saved your file, MuseScore never ever deletes it. So it is exactly there where you saved it - in the same folder, with the same filename. So I'm guessing you simply are looking in the wrong folder - or maybe you are only trying to find it in the recent files list, which indeed won't be current after a crash. But again, the file is still exactly where you saved it, so just be sure to browse to the folder you saved it to when using File / Open to open the file.

If you continue to have trouble, it may be that you were mistaken about the location of the folder you actually saved to. A quick sanity check would be to create a new score then try to save it, and thus time note the exact pathname of the folder that MuseScore is defaulting to - it should be the same as the last folder you successfully created a file in. Although it's possible this too won't be current after a crash.

Also, if there were previous crashes, it's possible you were actually working on an autosave copy of the score rather than the actual score, and hence you need to look in the autosave folder to find that copy. In the future, after a crash and recovery, it's best to do an explicit save to be sure you really are working on the "real" copy of the score in the folder you originally saved it to.

To find the autosave folder, see https://musescore.org/en/node/52116

If you continue to have trouble, please tell us what version of MsueScore, what OS, and the exact pathname of the folder you believed you had saved the file to.
