Dynamics: Hairpins for bowed/wind instruments
I need to program a crescendo - decrescendo with Cellos and Horns in F which are holding single notes over multiple measures. I can draw it, but it won't play.
Musescore 362
Win7 x64
MuseScore_General.sf3
I have read the manual (dld 6/14/21), read the online How-To, combed the forum, verified my font is current enough, verified SND is enabled in all the right places, and anything else I could think of, twice.
I'm stumped. Have attached an example. According to my reading of the literature and discussions, this should work. This must be a PEBCAC! Where have I gone wrong?
Thanks for looking!

Works for me. I tried the main piece then generated cello part.
OS: Ubuntu 21.04, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.6.2.548021370, revision: 3224f34
What is PEBCAC , is this something I should know about in order to improve my music? Or is it related to supratentorial problems?

So you heard cello2 and the horns gradually get louder in the first four measures? I do not. Try muting cello1 and listen again? For me, the velocity cruises along at the initial setting and then, blam!, in measure 5 everybody's MF (excepting cello1, which does swell).
Yes, a PEBCAC could be a supratentorial issue. It's an older IT support acronym used to covertly disparage a (usually) novice user, in this case myself!

Welcome to the joys of working with fonts. I often have two scores for any piece. One to hand to real players and one that I mark to get playback like I want it. For your score I reset the horn dynamics from p to pp, and the mf to f.

So, K, not C. I thought it might be Problem Exists Between Cerebrum and Computer (hence supratentoriell, oder oberhalb der Schleimhaut, die den Körper vom Gehirn trennt).

Or just EBKAC, Error Between Keyboard And Chair.
Or Level 8 Error (from the 7 layer OSI model)

Level 8 - haha! In the auto trade it's called the "loose nut behind the steering wheel."

I was using Problem Exists Between Chair and Computer - PEBCAC, But I like PEBKAC too.
Single note dynamics definitly work in general, and also for this score: Horn and the cellos have it switched on in Staff-/Instrument poperties and are using an expr. sound in Mixer and I can hear it on playback.

I am posting a simplified version of the "excerpt", "excerpt2", which removes cello1 to cut down on distractions.
When I play this sequence on my setup, the loudness of cello2 and the horns never change from their initial velocity over the first 4 measures. Then, at measure 5, boom!, full-on MF.
Surely, either something's wrong with my setup, or I have not stated the problem adequately.
Would you do me the kindness of examining this again? I submit that the hairpins in the first 4 measures are not functioning.

You say you are using the MuseScore_General.sf3 soundfont? Have you verified this in the Synthesizer?
Using the Mixer, if you solo either of those instruments, can you then hear the single note dynamics?
In the Mixer, does 'Sound' show 'French Horns Expr.' and 'Cello Expr.' for those instruments?

> In the Mixer, does 'Sound' show 'French Horns Expr.' and 'Cello Expr.' for those instruments? No and Bingo! - that was the problem.
Thank you, jm6stringer, for sussing it out!
Getting back to work...
