I found the cause of the problem, if my sound format (dont really know the name) is set to 24 bit, 96000 Hz thats when the sound gets messed up but if its set to 24 bit, 48000 Hz it works fine.
I have also found this issue (audio very choppy) in following cases:
1) Newly created score, single instrument with Native Instruments Massive X as plugin chosen for this instrument through mixer.
2) Opened another user's Musescore 2 file, which I believe used the orchestral Musescore soundfonts. This had over 10 instruments and was very choppy.
However audio seemed to be fine in cases:
1) New score, using Surge XT vst plugin.
2) New score, using Massive X (so apparently it was choppy once and now fine?)
3) Opening a saved score with Surge XT plugins, and switching one to Massive X.
So unfortunately doesn't seem to be consistent on my end yet, but thought I'd share more info.
I'm running Musescore 4.0.0 on Win 10 21H2

Really in 4.x-dev, i.e a pre-alpha development build?
Which exactly, on what operating system?
