Scrambled audio

• Feb 1, 2022 - 11:26

Musescore scrambles the audio settings on my Windows 10 Pro laptop:

Version 20H2
OS build 19042.1466
Experience: Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3920.0)
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7200U CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.71 GHz
Installed RAM 8.00 GB
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Think I'm using the latest version of Musescore:

OS: Windows 10 (10.0), Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.6.2.548021803, revision: 3224f34

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM:
I sometimes work in Musescore with headphones plugged in, sometimes without. If I make sure the headphones are in when I close Musescore AND when I reboot the laptop it's OK. If I don't then the next time I use my laptop the audio is distorted (white noise on top of any original audio) - even if Musescore has not been opened.

It takes me a while disabling speakers and rebooting the laptop until I can get the speakers to work as normal again. I haven't found a way of predicting when this will happen and of quickly restoring the sound settings. I didn't have this problem with earlier versions of Musescore.

Is there something I'm missing? Is it because I sometimes use headphones and sometimes don't? Not seeking to allocate blame or criticise, just to clarify and fix. (I think Musescore is amazing.)

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have but not in a consistent way. The troubleshooter didn't bring up anything when I tried it the first few times after I had the problem. I did reinstall audio drivers and it worked for a while but then happened intermittently after that. (My sister had the same issue - with a different Windows laptop. She reinstalled the audio drivers and the problem stopped).

I haven't been able to recreate the scrambled audio to order. Think maybe I need to allocate a few more hours to trying to work out what happens. (Posted on the forum in the hope someone would have a quick and easy explanation but so many variables :-) )

Oh, would that there were quick and easy answers :)
Interesting that sound is OK for awhile after reinstalling drivers. There are cases where the latest drivers cause problems and it is necessary to revert to an older driver.
