"Append measures" not working as expected

• Feb 18, 2022 - 05:19

I've been using Musescore for a couple years now, and "insert/append measures" always did what it said on the tin: inserted or appended the number of measures I specified.

Since I picked it up for this term's music, however (coincidentally after the engraving update?), the insert/append commands have been behaving oddly. Instead of the proper number of blank measures, I get one measure with a thick horizontal line through it and the number of measures I asked for notated above this line. If I try to add notes to this mutant measure, the bar and number disappear, and I can edit as usual, but I'm left with only one measure. What is going on? I have searched the forums and online in general and have found no answers.

Ah. I see. I mean, I assumed the number meant the number of measures I'd appended, but was extremely confused when they all collapsed down to one when I tried to edit. Because the program assumed I wanted them all empty.

It's kind of a weird functionality, but I guess it makes sense. I'd never dealt w/multimeasure rests before, obviously, so was completely at sea. (I'm not a composer; I use Musescore to learn my parts for choral music.)

Thanks for your help.

Multimeasure rests are used mostly in instrument music, but would also be perfectly normal in choral music if you are reading from an individual part instead of the full score. Having to look at a sea of empty measures and keep track of where you are is next to impossible; it usually works much better to simply have a count. So that's music is normally published that way, for individual parts. For the full score, this rarely happens, because it would be unusual for everyone to be resting for multiple measures.
