  1. Define a shortcut for "Go to recent playback cursor position".
  2. Find/Goto bar, say, 53.
  3. Play until the end (space bar).
  4. Go to recent playback cursor position using the previously defined shortcut.
==> Playback start position is always one bar before the expected (52 instead of 53). Bars 52 and 53 are both highlighted in the usual selection rectangle.

If you play again until the end, next start bar will be 51, (bars 51, 52, 53 highlighted) and so on.
This behaviour is independent from the score: I discovered it at first on a fairly complex score (three staves, time signature changes, bpm changes) and then reproduced it on a very simple one (single staff, plain 4/4, no bpm changes).

Sure this isn't just due to the 1st measure being pickup measure and as such not counted?

On a score I tried this with that shortcut takes me to the start of the score. So I guess a sample score is needed

Hm. Did you maybe press the Play button in toolbar instead of the space bar? Just performing the sequence I described (Find/Goto - Space bar for playing - shortcut for "Go to recent playback cursor position") should take you to the measure selected by Find/Goto (but one measure before). That's my experience. I never was restarted from the first bar, however that was not my aim.
