Metric Modulation Playback Issue

• Mar 12, 2022 - 13:44

Hi, everyone. I'm having an issue with modulating the meter and reverting it back to the original meter in the next measure. I have the first measure at 𝅘𝅥=𝅗𝅥, and practically anything I've tried in the second measure has either had no effect in the playback or is faster or slower than I want it to be.

What should go here.PNG

Here's what I've tried on the second measure:

I should also note that in the playback, 𝅘𝅥=𝅗𝅥 and 𝅗𝅥=𝅘𝅥 have the same effect on the first measure, i.e. both are slower than the original tempo. Should this be the case?

Edit: I found out after further trials that 𝅘𝅥.=𝅗𝅥 is also slightly too fast. The picture has been edited to be more accurate.

There's a fix for dotted quarter to eighth, in https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/pull/10007 (for master, merger, so will be in MuseScoore 4) and https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/pull/9000 (for 3.x).
The others should work though.
Mind to share the score?
Do check the Inspector on those (and toggle the "Follow Text", off and back on, a known issue). Did you take them from the palette or construct them on your own? At least some of those you must have build yourself, as they are not from the Tempo palette.

Hi Jojo,

I did use the original palette, and upon checking the inspector I found that there's a way to make the metric modulation notation not follow the tempo. It uses the same "Tempo Text". So maybe that will also help?

Now that I look at it, though, I changed the original tempo from 160BPM to 145BPM, so the second measure got stuck at 160BPM? I am using 𝅘𝅥.=𝅗𝅥, which may have worked out before I changed the tempo to 145BPM. I still don't know why it would work, though. It doesn't make sense to me, at least mathematically.

I just did this:

Defeult temp os a score is 120. The 1st modulation makes it 60, seems correct (1/2). The 2nd makes it 90, seems correct to (1/3 more), the last makes it 120 again, seems corect too (1/4 more)

I think I got it now! So the metric modulation is always set at 120 BPM (default tempo) by default, and I need to click the checkmark on "Follow Text" twice in order for it to be calculated. And because of this I got 𝅘𝅥=𝅗𝅥 and 𝅗𝅥=𝅘𝅥 backwards.

Also, if I change the original tempo, the metric modulation needs to be recalculated by clicking the checkmark twice once more.

Thanks for your help!
