Uploading Copyright Scores Privately
Hello all,
I have a general question about uploading scores that are under copyright, but as private scores:
Obviously, you can't just upload scores publicly that are under copyright, as that would be an infringement of the copyright. What I would like to know is, is it allowed to upload copyright scores but set to a private viewing only, so as not to infringe on the copyright of the owner?
I realise this is a bit of a strange question, but my thinking is that if the score isn't available for public viewing, then it doesn't break any copyright laws. I ask because I have some film music copied into MuseScore and I wanted to see it on MuseScore's version of Synthesia, which you can only do by uploading it online.
Again, I would like to stress that I do not intend to ever have copyright scores up for public viewing, but more using the online uploading platform for storage of them, if you will.
Just thought I'd ask before uploading them this way, then getting my account banned for copyright infringement!
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Dave.

Please see https://musescore.org/en/faq#faq-20657 and understand that this type of question is better placed on that site.
That being said, their policy on Public Scores that infringe copyright is marking them as private and no other actions are taken against the account.

... if a copyright holder insists in that.

Hello and thanks for the reply,
I take it then that I can upload scores under copyright, so long as the score is set to private viewing only?
Once again, I am not uploading these for public viewing, only for me to see.
Kind regards,
Dave.

We are not lawyers, and you're still on the wrong forum to discuss this. In my view, yes you can; but I'm just a user with an opinion.

" I have some film music copied into MuseScore". Did you do this by ear or using printed music?
I think you should check the copyright laws for the country you live in. Music copyright law is a long and winding road. In some places, if you bought sheet music, you only have the right to own that sheet. Not the right to do whatever you want with it. It doesn't make any difference if the public sees it or not.
Synthesia the piano learning program? Might be worth $40 to not have to upload anything.

You can upload anything to musescore.com. And even public. If under foreign copyright and public and the copyright holder demands, it'll get set to private.
