How to start the score with the second beat?

• Jun 11, 2022 - 19:31

Hi there!

I hope this finds you well.

I would like to know how do I start the score on the second beat and end the score on the third beat in a 4/4 time signature?

I can't seem to delete the crotchet rest at the beginning and end (which is inaccurate score writing)!

Please help and thank you in advance. :)

Best Wishes,
Charisa.

Assuming for the first measure you mean you want it to be a pickup, then deleting the first beat via Ctrl+Delete as mentioned works well, and then also exclude the measure from the count in measure properties. In the future, for your next score, you can simply tell MuseScore you want a pickup in the wizard when you create your score.

For the last measure, note it isn't incorrect at all to leave it full duration. It's only short/simple forms that might possible be repeated (eg, hymns, minuets) where it is conventional to shorten the last bar to facilitate that repetion, so that returning to the pickup completes the bar rather than adding beats. For any longer forms that are not intended to repeat, shortening the last bar is not necessary at all. For a while back in the day some publisher still did it, but I don't think most do anymore.
