Cannot insert a Note

• Jun 12, 2022 - 11:47

I was having no trouble with musescore the other day, and now when I try to insert a note, I go into note mode (the note N is blue and on the "Step-Time" default, I select the note value I want and see the note, then when I click on the measure, nothing happens.

Instead of clicking, what happens if you type a note name (a letter from A to G)?

You did not mention you were entering percussion.
Drum notation behaves differently from pitched note entry. For using the mouse to enter percussion, see:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/drum-notation#mouse

In any event, typing the note name is not a "workaround", but an alternate way of entering notes via the computer keyboard.

Thanks Jm6stringer for the inputs. I was having the “can’t use my mouse to add notes” problem on both a file with a single staff and file with single-note percussion. This was true after restarting my computer, so I think it’s a setting somewhere typing the note names works, but would get burdensome when filling in chords, especially in high treble.

There is no setting that would ever disable the mouse from entering notes. So either your mouse has become defective, or else there is something else going on. First be sure you are in regular step time note input mode - the icon on the toolbar should be an "N". If it isn't, use the dropdown menu to change to that. Also be sure you aren't trying to click so far away from the staff that MuseScore can't tell where you are trying to enter. If still no luck, next try some compressed air to clean the mouse.

If none of that helps, best to attach your score and give precise step by step instructions to reproduce the problem.

But FWIW, entering notes by typing note names is almost always many times faster than clicking. Chords are done with Shift+letter name.

Thank you everyone for the thoughts. I'm new to musescore, and it worked perfectly before this one incident. the keyboard tools and tips will be a huge help in the future, even after getting my mouse working again. This tool is a huge asset to my work as a volunteer musician and music educator.
