tied notes

In the attached score I expected each pair of tied notes to sound once bu I hear both notes sound individually. What am I doing wrong?

I think I used ties; I went to the tool bar and selected the tied note symbol. Next I notice in the palette that there was no symbol for the end of a repeated section, i.e. a double vertical with one dot on its left; what I see is a double symbol with a dot on each side; I reloaded muse score 3; should I have downloaded muse score 3.6? I still hear a note sounded twice for two notes of the same pitch tied together.

> I think I used ties;
When I open your score and click on the 'ties', the Inspector tells me that they are slurs and not ties.
Try: delete a slure, select the beginning note and press '+'. At least this works too in version 2.3.2. and also in version 2.3.2 it is shown, that you have used slurs and not ties.

I use version 3.6.2 and I don't remember how it was with versions before 2.3.2 (Which subversion do you have?). I recommend upgrading to version 3.6. The only thing is that if you share your score with others who continue to use version 2, they will not be able to open scores written with version 3.6.
Vice versa: all scores written with version 2 can be opened also in version 3.6 and should be saved again in the score directory of v. 3.6.

I'd checked also this issues with 2.3.2. As I found, all is working as it should. '+' or the tie symbol in the menue bar, the repeat bar line and also the fact that you've used slurs instead of ties.

I fixed the problem as follows: select the tie, edit delete, go back and insert the tie by selecting the first note and clicking the icon in the task bar. Why are you talking about slurs? Does not a slur connect two notes of different pitch. I always use the tie icon at the top. I still get a barline palette without the end repeat barline. i loaded Muse score 3.6. Why is my barline palette in error? many thanks. Keith

You probably deleted the end repeat line by mistake.
Open the master palette, section barlines, there is a end repeat bar line.
Drag it to you standard barline palette and there is it again ...

> Why are you talking about slurs? Does not a slur connect two notes of different pitch.
Yes, this is the intention of slurs. But in your score you've used slurs where you want to have ties. Therfore I talked about slurs and this was your mistake. By replacing them, as you did, you've corrected it.

By the way: the '+' on your computer keyboard adds also a tie. If you need a slur, use 's'.

Ties always connect two notes of the same pitch. Slurs may connect any number of notes, and the pitches may be the same or different. But, MuseScore doesn't use AI to try to guess which you meant. if you use the tie command, it tries to add a tie, period. You may have thought you remembered using the button but of course, this score was created over 5 years ago, so no surprise if you would remember incorrectly. Anyhow, the score doesn't lie - as the status reports, you clearly added a slur, not a tie.

The picture you attach here shows an end barline. Are saying that's not your picture? If something is missing for you, you might have inadvertently deleted it. Click the "..." button on the palette and choose the reset option.

Change the piano to voice and you will hear the ties. You will also hear that you don't need the end of phrase notes to be so long. They clash with the chords. For example in measures 4 and 10.

Perhaps a little change of perspective might help. Ties connect two (or more) notes of the same pitch, and slurs connect notes of different pitches. This is true on the face of it. What do we mean by "connect"? I think slurs are intended to be phrase markings. A group of notes in a melody are intended to be played as one thought, rather than just individual notes. That is accomplished in different ways by different instruments. Wind players don't "tongue" (or separate attack) a sting of notes marked with a slur. String players play slurred notes without changing bow direction.

In the case of MuseScore, slurs are not realized in playback and they are mostly for real players.
