In MS3 if you go to "Edit" then "Instruments" and uncheck "Visible" next to an instrument it still allows the instrument/voice to be heard in playback.
In MS4 if you make an instrument/voice "hidden" then it forces it to be muted and you cannot manually unmute it in playback controls.
"Workaround" is to unhide the voice/instrument - not ideal.
Comments
This is a deliberate change due to the new instrument design. Now, if you want an invisible playback staff, hide the staff itself, not the instrument. Additional controls may be implemented in a future update.

Where can we log a feature request to have a preference option for making hiding instruments not mute them please? It's much faster to shift-click brass and percussion and click the eye to get the rest of the orchestra viewable on one screen than make each staff invisible one by one.
Never mind - found it here - https://github.com/orgs/musescore/discussions/15945
