Trying to edit old Muse Score files...

• Dec 26, 2022 - 22:34

Hello,
I have created several children's music books with MuseScore over the years. When I try to open and edit songs from the books I created in 2016, the formatting is all messed up.
Is there a way to restore them to their original format?

  1. It appears they were created in v2.0.3.1 - which version are you trying to open them with? v3.x or v4?
  2. Have you disabled any automatic application of new fonts/layout on opening?
  3. Do you have an old version of the program you can use (possibly to export to XML format)?

Given there are very few measures, perhaps just fixing everything manual will be faster?

Thank you for your quick reply. I am trying to open them with v3 and I did disable the new fonts and layout. The trick is that I have about 540 songs like this in 36 different books... but I am guessing that going through and fixing things manually is going to be the best bet. I was hoping I was missing something simple since I haven't used MuseScore much in the last year or two. I really appreciate your time.

The algorithms have improved tremendously over the years, meaning that scores in which you made lots of manual adjustments to overcome the deficiencies of older versions will now look weird indeed. If you're just trying to do a quick edit, easiest to just use the old version on those files. but if you're planning on spending more than an hour or so on an update to a score, it will almost certainly be better to use MsueScore 4 - with vastly improved defaults - first resetting all you old manual adjustments and reassessing what adjustments might be needed to achieve some custom effect here or there.

In the case of this file in particular, it seems you also misused staff text to substitute for fingering, and that's a problem you'd want to fix. MuseScore 2 might not have done anything smart with actual fingering, but MuseWScore 3 & 4 do, so entering correctly fixes a lot of problems were needing to fix manually in the past.
