Musescore 4.0.2 - Cannot open specific file

• May 14, 2023 - 07:50

I have a piece that I last saved in 3.6.2 that doesn't open in version 4.0.2. Initially, when trying to open with 4.0.2, I got:

1) the message that the score was last saved in 3.6.2, then
2) an error about corrupted measures.

I fixed these corrupted measures in 3.6.2 and resaved the file.

When I tried to open in 4.0.2, there was no longer an error about corrupted measures- just the first message. However I click okay for that first message, the score opens, and as it's loading the audio samples (loading bar at bottom left of the screen), it crashes. The program stays open but this specific file won't stay open. Note I have other scores saved in 3.6.2 that open just fine.

I tried converting the file to .zip and extracting to open the .mscx file as well but that didn't work.

I'm running Windows 11 on a Dell G15 laptop and using the built-in speakers. Also, I haven't done anything with them on Musescore, but I do have VSTs installed that I use for Ableton.

Please see the file in question attached- hoping someone is able to help guide me in the right direction.

I'm not sure what you mean by "loading audio samples".
I'm on Windows 10, your file opened fine for me (with the 'last saved in 3.6.2 message') in 4.0.2.
I am using MS Basic for sound.
I have saved your score in MS4. Here it is:

Maybe this one works for you (having been saved in MS4 with no problems).

I tried to open the original file in MU4, W11, Muse Sounds. While the Muse Sounds were loading, the file crashed. I opened your file and after a bit on hesitation it loaded with Basic Sounds. I tried to activate Muse Sounds and the file crashed.

Thanks! I think there's a problem with specifically the Muse Sounds tubular bells.

I opened the file Jm6stringer saved with MS Basic sounds and it opened fine, but when I switched all sounds to Muse Sounds it promptly crashed the file.

I tried it again, this time changing each instrument one by one to Muse Sounds and it crashed when I got to the tubular bells.

I tried a third time and changed the tubular bells only and it crashed again.

The final time I changed everything but the tubular bells to Muse Sounds, and it works fine. I'm alright with this for my piece but this could be an issue for other pieces with a central tubular bell part- and not sure if other Muse Sounds have this effect as well.
