Try playing your pieces with Mixer open.
I had the same issue as yours, and it was very frustrating, because everything seemed to be laggy too. However, I "accidentally" opened the Mixer before playing the piece, and it somehow resolved the issue.
The crackling sound may be related to the buffer size of the audio engine. You can try to increase or decrease the buffer size in the Preferences > I/O menu and see if that helps.

Whether that works or not for you, please respond in that thread and provide the requested info, to help us diagnose what might be happening. We'd very much like to figure out why this happens on some systems, so we need help from the people who experience this issue!
