Re: Multiple Clefs and Key Signature

• Jul 25, 2023 - 06:23

Sometimes, when I adjust the measure width, multiple clefs and key signatures would appear in different places. I understand this topic has been raised before, it there a solution? I know I can save, close and then reopen, but sometimes, I have to adjust again, and the same problem occurs. It could be quite frustrating.

"... multiple clefs and key signatures would appear in different places"

Please explain. Are these "different places" always at the end of a system? In that case what you are seeing is a Courtesy clef or time signature (which warns about an imminent change of clef or time signature).

You can disable showing these "end of system" alerts in the Properties panel for the new clef or new time signature. Look for and untick:
Show courtesy clef on previous system
Show courtesy time signature on previous system

Thanks, Daniel. The "different places" are not always at the end of a system. Seems quite random. But your comment is very helpful because it does show the "alert" as well, which actually I don't mind. Related to this, which key changes, is it possible to add an alert as well? For example, when the key changes from 3 sharps to 2 sharps, it it possible to automatically add a natural the end of the previous bar?

Yes, you can add "cancelling naturals" in front of the new key signature. Use the menu option Format > Style... > Accidentals > ♮ in key signatures > Before key signature if changing to fewer ♯ or ♭ :
Show_naturals_in_key_signature.jpg

But this is considered old-fashioned notation, which is why the MuseScore default is set to Only for a change to C Maj / A min.

There was a bug that was especially prevalent in some older versions where measures that previously had a clef or key signature could remember that even after they were later deleted and might reappear. All known cases of this have been fixed, but some older scores could still be infected, and there could be some as-yet-unreported cases that can cause this. If you attach your score and describe more about it - when you started it and with which version, and unusual edits you might have made to the clefs or key signatures, etc we can try to investigate.
