Remove the natural reverb of the drum

• Nov 2, 2023 - 15:56

Hello, I have generated a midi file of a drum score in musescore. I sent it to my ardour sequencer but there is a natural reverb that I can't remove unless I put in a miniature chamber reverb. Is it possible, for example, to send the midi file of the drum score created in musescore and have it played by hydrogen or to remove this reverb?

Thanks in advance

the MIDI wouldn't contain the "reverb", that is a function of the virtual instrument (VI) and/or host which converts the MIDI into audio - and depending on the VI, it might have an effect (FX) called "ambience" or "room" setting which can be turned off, or the samples (if it uses samples) may have the reverb built-in. so read up on your VI of choice to see if you can turn it off, or if its built-in. you might need to use another sampler/VI etc to get a dry drum sound. worst case there are "de-reverb" tools which can help reduce or remove it (although those can also impact the audio quality).

It wasn't clear which version of Musescore you were using, but if you're using Musescore 3 then you'll need to go to the Synthesizer under View. Then go to the Master Effects tab. You'll see entries for Effect A and Effect B. Effect A by default is to turn on Zita1 which controls reverb. You can either choose NoEffect for Effect A or you can turn down the Zita 1 Output knob toward Dry.

As mentioned below depending on the drum set that is chosen, the drum set can have reverb, but usually doesn't, since its easy enough to add reverb.

Frankly, I'm not real impressed with Musescore 4 yet. It feels like a step back. Hopefully in future versions some of the lost functionality from Musescore 3 will come back. But for now I'm sticking with Musescore 3.
