Extra rests corrupt the music in opening MusicXML

• Nov 13, 2023 - 11:11

Hi, when I open this MusicXML
https://www.cpdl.org/wiki/images/0/05/Sweelinck_Pseaume2.mxl
I got a file that 's sort of ok. Have to manually set time to 4/2.
But then there's a lot of measures corrupted because of extra rests.
Does anyone know a solution, otherwise I guess starting all over again is
less time consuming then repairing every measure.

MuseScore 3.6.2 and 4.1.1 reports it as being corrupt:

Measure 34, Staff 2 incomplete. Expected: 4/2; Found: 0/1
Measure 34, Staff 5 incomplete. Expected: 4/2; Found: 0/1

I wonder whether "CapToMusic.py CapXML to MusicXML converter version 2.4" screwed up or whethe it was corrupt in Capella already

". Have to manually set time to 4/2."
That's a good start: more productive than using the time signature shown in the CPDL PDF available here:
https://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Psalm_2_-Pourquoy_font_bruit_et_s%27assemblent_les_gents%3F(Jan_Pieterszoon_Sweelinck)

"But then there's a lot of measures corrupted because of extra rests."
The MusicXML file is quite a mess. If you open the MusicXML file and compare it with the PDF on CPDL, there are indeed a lot of extra rests. But if you patiently put in system breaks to match the CPDL PDF file, it should be clear where you have to remove a specific rest (Ctrl+Del) from each measure. That should still be quicker than entering the music from scratch.

It can be confusing because tied half notes carry across the (invisible) barline in the PDF, whereas in the MusicXML file all such notes are broken at the notional barline and tied over to a shorter duration note.

[EDIT] ... and as Jojo pointed out, m.34 is a write-off.
It will be simpler to insert a clean empty measure before m.34, delete the corrupt measure and re-enter the required notes in the new measure.
