Can't change default MuseScore version for .mscz extension

• Jan 5, 2024 - 03:07

Ever since I updated my MuseScore 4 to 4.2, the default app for .mscz was changed to MuseScore 4 (previously MuseScore 3). It still opens with ms4 automatically even though I've already changed the default to ms3 in my system (attached images)

I have the same problem in Windows 11. Despite Musescore 3 being designated the default app for *.mscz files in the Windows settings, the Musescore 4 icons show for *.mscz files and they open in Musescore 4.

Thanks. As it turns out, I uninstalled MS4 and the problem persisted. So, I looked in the registry, and found lots of registry keys still set to MS4, including keys pertaining to Windows Explorer, default icons, default file assignments, and many other inscrutable settings (witn kanji names even) for both MS4 and MS3. So, I uninstalled MS3 too, and used the registry editor to delete all keys associated with either. I probably deleted about 50 references to either program that were still in the registry after they were uninstalled. Then I installed MS3 and all works well. I'll try installing MS4 too and see how that goes.
