Please give a little more detail. Which older version are you talking about?
As far as I know it has not been a problem to open files from older versions with a newer one, it's just the other way around that doesn't work.
It would also not be a bad idea to attach one of these older files here so that someone can investigate whether it is a general problem or only in your installation.
