Section Breaks Need Adjustment

• Mar 2, 2024 - 03:31

Hello,

I've been using MuseScore over the past few years now, and the development and progress that it has undergone is absolutely phenomenal. So many features that make my engraver heart happy. However, I have had a longtime gripe that bothers me as a composer: the way section breaks function in MuseScore.

I would like the ability to show/hide time signatures and key signatures for new sections after section breaks, wherever the composer feels as necessary.

"But the point of section breaks is to have a pause in between movements, so it's not necessary to implement this as a feature."

Nope. I disagree. If you truly believe this, I don't think you've ever heard of "attacca," which means to go straight into the next movement without pause. This is what I'm implementing in my score, and it's been frustrating to not be able to show the new key/time signatures at the end of a movement going into the next.

And before you suggest that I don't use section breaks, what will I do about long instrument names? Because as far as I'm aware, it's impossible to re-display long instrument names in the middle of a score without the use of section breaks. Yes, I want to display them after the attacca.

I've attached an excerpt from Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2, between mvts II and III (which are attacca), to show what I'd like to see implemented.

I've also attached a test score containing the elements that I'm mainly covering in this discussion here. Feel free to play around with it if you don't quite understand what I'm getting at; or you can just ask me to clarify anything (even though I'm not good at explaining things).

Thanks!
