[Feature Request] Export Continuous View PDF/PNG

• Mar 6, 2024 - 16:53

Early on in MS4, there was a bug which caused exporting to PDF to export in whatever view you were using (e.g. if you were working in continuous horizontal view, the export would be one long PDF).

This has since been removed, but I think we should bring it back! It is very useful for contemporary music being read by players on an iPad, or just to show a large “structural diagram” of the piece.

It would be pretty intuitive, if the export was tied to whatever view you mode were in in “Publish” mode, and would have minimal if any disruption to existing workflows. I actually find it more intuitive if whatever you see in publish mode is what you get when you export (rather than now, where it always exports in page mode).

As the PDF format has a width and height limit, this just isn't possible, or is only in those special cases where the score isn't wider/higher than those limits

the limit is something like 5m x 5m (~200in x 200in) as well as limits (in billions) of "objects" and file size. so effectively if you have (e.g.) 8-1/2" / 210mm wide pages, then less than 24 pages wide in a PDF. other formats (EPUB, MOBI, Flipbook, RTF, HTML, SVG etc) might support more but may also require specialized readers.

Also! I know there is a workaround where you can just set the page width really long and export it that way, but this is rather disruptive when trying create both a page version and a continuous version of the same score (in my experience this can sometimes mess with formatting once returning to normal page length).
