change note duration on chord already entered

• Oct 14, 2014 - 07:31

I'm sure I'm just not looking in the right place but for the life of me I can't find a way to change note duration on a note already entered--an editing operation one would think would be one of the most simple and commonly performed. But there's nothing about it in the Edit Mode section of the manual, nor in any of the How-Tos on the web site. A forum search for "change note duration" yielded nothing relevant either, at least that I could see in the first four pages of results (after which I gave up).

Score is in 4/4 and starts out with a chord in crochet. There are a few notes after it, then a quarter rest. I want to change that first opening chord to half-note duration (which should automatically eliminate the crochet rest).

But after I shift-click so all the notes in the chord are selected, I can't find any way to change the duration. Clicking the half-note icon on the toolbar doesn't do anything, nor does pressing 6 (the minim icon on the toolbar is selected but the chord doesn't change to minim). Right-clicking yields no relevant options.

So how the heck DO you alter note duration? I know it's gotta be basic, but I have really tried to RTFM on this and am now banging my head against the wall.

You need copy/paste here. Copy the notes following the one you want to make longer, make the note longer and paste to the first note/rest after that longer note.
Same if you want to shorten a note but don't want that rest.
It works just differently from a text editor, we don't have an insert mode

To change the value of the chord don't shift-click all the notes. Select one note by a single click and then choose a new note value from the keyboard or screen.

If you choose a longer value it will replace anything within that value in the bar, so if you want to move the following notes do as Jojo says and cut them first and paste them in the new place before or after you change the value of the chord.

To change duration on a chord already entered, you have to not be in Note Entry mode. While in Note Entry mode, you can enter notes (naturally) but not change duration. Once you are out of note entry mode, then changing duration is as somple as clicking or selecting the note and pressing the key/button for the desired duration.

And tell us what OS and version of MuseScore. PNG export *does* work in 1.x and in 2.0; I use it often. If checking the transparency settings does not solve your issue (I don't recall ever touching these when I've used the feature) then please post the score you are having problems with and list the steps to reproduce the problem.

BTW, also checkout the Snippet Creator plugin (see plugins menu to right of this page).

OOOPS, posted in wrong thread, but I'm sure you'll see it anyhow :-)
