MuseScore Studio won't play scores

I have tried this with several different scores and none of them will play.
The play button changes to a pause button and a blue line appears at the beginning of the score, but the position counter doesn't increment, nor does the blue line, which I presume should denote the current position in the score.

I have just updated to the latest version, and the problem persists.
OS: Windows 10 Version 2009 or later, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore Studio version (64-bit): 4.4.1-242490810, revision: 0b3dd00

I only use standard audio on my PC, and other applications can play sounds. I have tried both the MuseScore Basic and Muse Sounds profiles, but neither seems to make any difference.
If I try to set a value for the audio buffer, MuseScore Studio crashes.

I have been able to export a score to MP3 and play that, but it is extremely quiet.

Any support would be gratefully received.
