Bar Numbers
I have downloaded a score in M 4.4.2 originally written in M 3.6. It will not let me add bar numbers although I have used the correct procedure: Format - Bar Numbers - Add

I think you may have missed the final step in this menu path:
Format > Style... > Bar numbers > enable "Bar numbers" checkbox > Click OK
