Default page size in templates
I have created a template in MS4.5, and in Format > Page settings I have set the page size to A4, which is also the default page size in the settings for my default printer.
If I open the template file directly, then the page size is A4 as expected; however, if I go to File > New > My templates and select the template to create a new score based on it, then the page size is Letter but should be A4 as saved. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

With OS: Windows 11 Version 2009 or later, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore Studio version (64-bit): 4.5.1-250800846, revision: 603eca8 these settings were recognized! This means: if I set a template file to A5, a new score based on this template will have A5.
Which operating system and which Musescore version are you using? Could be a bug ...

I am using MuseScore 4.5.2.251141402 on Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (i.e., latest version of both).
There's indeed an exeption for A4 and Letter: default for those depends on locale (or printer, I don't recall the exact details), regardless of what the template says.

Thanks for the reply. I am in Australia, and the standard paper size here is A4. I checked Settings > Region in my Windows 11 setup, and "Country" was set to "Australia". However, there was another setting: "Regional format", which was set to "English (United States)", presumably the default, so I tried changing it to "English (Australia)", and now my MuseScore template creates new scores with A4 page size as expected.
Is this covered in the documentation (I did a search but couldn't find anything)?

I don't think it is documented (other than inside the source code maybe)

Why don't new scores based on a custom template just use the page size setting from the template?

EXCELLENT question!!! :-(

They do, except for A4 and Letter, the most common format, in order to be universally use file, so you can share them with users in other locales. That at least needs to be the case for those that are part of MuseScore

I think a score created from a template should just use the page size setting from the template. I don't understand why the sharing of files should affect this. If I create a score with the page size set as A4 (or any other size), and I send it to someone in a country where the standard paper size is something different, they can easily change the page size to suit their situation if they wish.

So the templates that come with MuseScore are created by user/developers using A4.
Then these won't work at all in the USA, if they wouldn't (like currently) automatically change to Letter.
And vice versa.
Why bother the other users with having to change that, if it can get automated?

There may have been a misunderstanding; I'm not talking about the standard templates that come with MuseScore, I'm talking about custom templates that I create myself (by saving in /Documents/MuseScore4/Templates). If I use one of my custom templates to create a new score (via New score > Create from template > My templates), I think the new score should have the page setting from the custom template (like it does if I open the template file directly).

And it is not?
If so, see my attempt to explain why that is.
There's no point in arguing with me about this, I'm just trying to explain how it works and why.
If you don't like this, file an issue on GitHub and argue with the developers.
